Feeding Guide: Transitioning Your Pet to Open Farm

Open Farm's Dog Feeding Guide

Looking to transition your pet's food, but not sure how? Here's a step-by-step on how to make this process as seamless as possible!

If you’re looking to upgrade your pet’s diet or start your furry friend on a new food, there are so many reasons why Open Farm is the right choice for you and your pet. At Open Farm, we’re raising the bar on the way we feed our pets, using only ethically sourced ingredients that serve a real purpose.

We offer a variety of proteins to choose from, including Homestead Turkey & Chicken, Catch-of-the-Season Whitefish, Farmer's Table Pork, Pasture-Raised Lamb and Wild-Caught Salmon. With this wide selection, you’re bound to find something that is the perfect fit for your pet. For pets with allergies & sensitivities, we also offer many single protein, poultry-free & potato-free options.

To transition your pet to Open Farm, a slow transitioning period over 7 – 10 days is recommended. To begin, we suggest introducing the Open Farm food into your pet's diet by mixing it in with your pet’s old food and slowly increasing the Open Farm feeding amounts over the transition period. It is important to introduce new food slowly because a quick transition could result in digestive issues, especially for pets with a sensitive digestive system.

Day 1 – 3: Begin to introduce Open Farm food. Your pet’s bowl should consist of 75% old pet food & 25% Open Farm food. Day 4 – 6: Increase your Open Farm feeding amount by 25%. Your pet’s bowl should consist of 50% old pet food & 50% Open Farm food. Day 7 – 9: Almost there! Continue to increase your Open Farm feeding amount by another 25%. Your pet’s bowl should now consist of 25% old pet food & 75% Open Farm food. Day 10: Your pet’s bowl should consist of 100% Open Farm food! Your furry friend is fully transitioned!

Once your pet has fully transitioned into one category of our food (i.e. Open Farm Dry Food), your pet can switch between any other flavor within that category without transition. If you’re looking to add our Freeze Dried Raw or Rustic Stews/Blends to your pet's diet, begin by implementing it as a topper first. It's a great way to introduce them to new foods and an even better way to satisfy those picky eaters! Remember to decrease the dry food feeding amounts accordingly to feeding guidelines, in order to avoid over feeding.

Not every pet can tolerate dietary changes and it is always best to consult your veterinarian before making any drastic changes. A transition period is different for all pets, so we encourage you to take your pet into consideration when planning on transitioning their food!

Our pets are flawless and their diets should be too!
