Meet Dr. Moran Tal-Gavriel, Open Farm’s Head of Veterinary Nutrition

Meet Dr. Moran Tal-Gavriel, Open Farm’s Head of Veterinary Nutrition

At Open Farm, our mission has always been clear: to do some good for animals and our planet. For us, that starts with making sure pets get the best nutrition possible. It’s why we take a thoughtful, transparent approach to how our food is made and how every nutritional decision is guided.

As part of that commitment, we’re proud to spotlight Dr. Moran Tal-Gavriel, our Head of Veterinary Nutrition.

From the beginning, we’ve worked closely with veterinarians and animal nutrition experts to help develop our recipes. That foundation has always mattered to us. Having a veterinary nutritionist on staff, deeply embedded in our team, strengthens our nutritionist-led pet food formulation process.

With veterinary expert pet nutrition in-house, we move beyond consultation and into day-to-day collaboration. It helps us craft veterinarian-developed dog and cat food with intention and care, while giving pet parents greater reassurance about who’s shaping their pet’s food and why. This deeper level of veterinary nutrition expertise allows us to answer pet parent questions with even more confidence and clarity. Importantly, we use veterinary-led formulation to ensure complete and balanced nutrition.

Meet Our Head of Veterinary Nutrition

Dr. Moran, BSc, DVM, DVSc, Dip. ECVCN, is one of just 100 board-certified veterinary nutritionists in North America, which are a small group of board-certified pet nutrition experts with advanced training focused entirely on animal nutrition.

In simple terms, a board-certified veterinary nutritionist is a veterinarian who has completed years of advanced training focused entirely on nutrition, similar to how other veterinarians specialize in areas like surgery or internal medicine. This includes a multi-year nutrition residency, advanced clinical and formulation experience, original research and case reports published in peer-reviewed journals, teaching experience, and comprehensive board examinations. The result is a level of expertise held by only a very small number of veterinarians.

Dr. Moran completed her Doctor of Veterinary Science (DVSc) and clinical nutrition residency at the University of Guelph, the sixth best school in the world for veterinary science and the number one in Canada. Her research explored the connection between feline obesity and gastrointestinal microbiome, and her work has been published in peer-reviewed journals

Dr. Moran draws on experience across clinical practice, academic research, and global product innovation, and she continues to support the next generation of veterinarians through academic advisory roles. Like many of us here at Open Farm, she’s also a devoted pet parent herself.

As a board-certified specialist in veterinary and comparative nutrition, Dr. Moran brings world-class veterinary nutrition expertise to Open Farm and helps guide how we think about long-term pet health.

What This Means for Open Farm—and Pet Parents

Having a board-certified veterinarian pet food nutrition expert in-house means our recipes are not only thoughtfully sourced, but also carefully designed to meet modern nutrition standards for dogs and cats. It reflects our ongoing commitment to offering pet food formulated by veterinarians who understand both the science and the real world needs of pets and their families.

We believe science-backed pet nutrition should feel reassuring, not overwhelming, and Dr. Moran helps us strike that balance by grounding our approach in evidence while staying focused on what matters most: helping pets live healthy, happy lives.

In her role, Dr. Moran works closely with our product, quality, and impact teams to guide formulation and innovation across dry, wet, and functional recipes. Her leadership strengthens our commitment to expert-led pet food formulation, while ensuring our food continues to meet consistent nutritional standards across every life stage.

Pet parents will also hear more directly from Dr. Moran through monthly blog articles, educational content, and Q&As across our social channels, helping make pet nutrition more accessible and easier to understand.

As we continue to grow, our focus remains the same: helping pets live their healthiest, happiest lives by delivering exceptional nutrition made from the world’s most responsibly sourced ingredients. With Dr. Moran’s expertise guiding our approach, we’re more confident than ever in our ability to shape the future of pet nutrition and continue raising the bar for what goes into your pet’s bowl.
