February marks National Pet Dental Health Month which helps serve as a little reminder to take the extra, necessary steps to clean and protect your furry friend’s teeth. Although it would be cute, our cats and dogs aren’t able to clean their teeth with a toothbrush every night, so it’s important pet parents take care of their pets' oral health.
For new and even experienced pet owners, it can be unclear what exactly needs to be done and when. That’s why we put this guide together to help pet owners do what’s best for their pet to ensure a clean mouth for their kitten or pup.
1.) Have Regular Examinations with Your Veterinarian.
You probably already have this step covered, but it’s important you and your pet visit the vet regularly. It’s absolutely crucial your dog or cat has consistent check-ups to make sure they are healthy, have their necessary shots and receive any essential treatments. This is especially important for kittens and puppies as they age into full-grown adults.
During the appointment, you can ask your vet all the questions you may have, like how to find the best healthy pet food for your dog or cat, any regimens to improve their overall health or even little helpful training tips to teach them. Prior to and in between visits, check your pets’ mouth for red gums, stinky breath and/or yellow teeth as these can lead to dental or oral disease if left untreated and should be brought to your veterinarian's attention right away.
2.) Brush Your Pet’s Pearly Whites.
As we mentioned earlier, dogs and cats can’t brush their teeth on their own (although it would be an adorable sight to see). However, that doesn’t mean they don’t need their teeth to be cleaned. It’s important you softly brush your dog or cat’s teeth with an animal toothbrush and a pet-formulated toothpaste.
Do NOT use regular, human toothpaste as there is too much fluoride which can be toxic to dogs and cats. If you need help finding and deciding on a pet-formulated toothpaste, talk to your veterinarian during the check-up for professional advice. Additionally, consider swapping to healthy dog treats for your pup so they can still enjoy a well-deserved treat that’s better for them and their health.

3.) Take Extra Measures to Protect Your Pet.
When it comes to your pet’s oral and overall health, you can take additional precautions so your dog or cat is energetic, healthy, feels their best and has a clean mouth. You can support their oral hygiene with a healthy diet that is well-balanced and not filled with low-grade ingredients. Chat with your veterinarian, conduct some research and find yummy, human grade dog food or deliciously fresh cat food for your pet.
A healthier, better diet is good for your pet’s health, and providing them with meals with real, beneficial ingredients that will help with keeping their teeth clean. And keep in mind, pets’ mouths have their own self-cleaning system, just like ours! There are certain proteins in the saliva which ward off infection, as well as chemical compounds that may protect against harmful bacteria.
